The practice of dressage requires that we are fully in our body. It is not quite about what to do or how to do it as much as it is about how to be present. How and what to do when undertaken with a proper attitude are merely devices used to educate you in how to reside in the body fully.

The more fully you connect with your own body, the easier it is to make a connection with the horse. Today, most people are not grounded or connected with nature and so the horse remains a mystery to them. We tend to live in our head and some live more in the feelings but where most fall short is they are not fully in their body.

To fully practice dressage is very far from being in our head or floating on emotional tides. It is about body connection and it starts with learning how to find patterns of relaxation. The next is how to find the grounding in the earth followed by an awareness of the internal aspects of the body.

One next learns to locate and release inner tensions. Sensing of space is next followed by the cultivation of a sense of cadence in the inward and outward flow.

The training of the horse and the human follow the same pattern. This is somatic learning. In dressage, much of this training is achieved indirectly but a conscious awareness can accelerate training time considerably.

The mind must know how to suspend its judgement and be able to surrender pattern thinking. Calm is always the place to start.

This is at once very clear and yet does not give the details of the how it is done. The direct teachings of this kind of work takes a special kind of student but its indirect teachings are folded into the daily work with the horse.

Practice is always the key but it is not how much you practice but the degree of awareness you bring to the work. Anyone can do this but not anyone will try. This is the door to dressage in its most beautiful form and it is your birthright.
